Wishes from one generation for the next

My Granny wrote me the following letter for my birth. I only received and got to read this letter for my 30th birthday. Her words and wisdom haven’t lost touch with time and reveal a visibly hidden, but noticeable side from my grandmother. I hope her wishes resonate with you as much as they do with me.

Dear Jakob,

The 5th of January was a great, cheerful day for all of us, it was your birthday. I am full of joy that you exist!

The years will pass, you will grow. In the year 2000 you will be 10 years old, you will graduate elementary school and a new decision will approach, your further education. Where will you journey take you? A few year later you will belong to the generation that shapes our world. Who can tell whether it will be easier or harder for your generation than for ours?

However, since one generation does not easily accept suggestions from the previous, I can merely express some wishes for you:

I hope material worries do not concern you too much, dear Jakob. Contentment so you can appreciate the little things.

I wish you good health, a happy heart and strong nerves to tackle and overcome life’s big and small challenges.

I wish you success and the strength to learn to live with failure and your own, little mistakes in life.

I yearn that you find good friends, people who like you and with whom it is worthwhile and rewarding to live.

For myself I hope for (quite) a few additional years to see, dear Jakob and your brothers Martin and Paul grow.

Farewell and god bless you!

In love, your granny

P.S.: As a reminder for your birthday I kept all newspapers of the 5th of January. One day you can see and read which sorrows where present in the world when you joined.
